Romeo: Naturalistic Garden Pond

Pond · Landscape Lighting Northport, NY

A client who spent time both up by the pool and down in the lower yard wanted a koi pond that could be enjoyed from both levels — not just from one spot.

The design brief came out of understanding how they actually used the yard: time up by the pool above, time down in the lower garden. We designed the pond with two deliberate viewing points — the waterfall and upper stream visible from the pool deck above, and the main pond visible and accessible at ground level. The lower pond is approximately 11 feet wide by 14 feet long and over 3 feet deep — sized right for koi. A large Japanese maple already on the property turned out to be the perfect spot: it provides shade that protects the fish from birds overhead, offers natural cover, and frames the pond beautifully from the house and patio. After the project started, a decorative dish bowl element with lights was added on the side. The client also upgraded to a significantly oversized filtration system to make long-term maintenance easier — a smart call that means less intervention for years to come. The project grew as they fell in love with what it was becoming.
